Wayfarer By Faith

Another one of my memorable moments when I was up in the Blue Mountains was on the first night when I befriended a kindly German chap from Stuttgart. It turns out he is the owner of a quaint café called Muk (which is his name, by the way) in the town of Stuttgart. He specializes in making a special kind of muesli (yes, he actually does!) and good coffee. He is very firm about using organic products and being kind to the environment. It was funny when I bumped into him while doing some grocery shopping in the Katoomba town. He waved and invited me to cook dinner together! It was great fun and he had a good bottle of wine to go with our sumptuous garlic prawns and spaghetti dinner. It was brilliant. I was so glad I had someone who could actually cook – so I learned a thing or two… (As you know, I’m quite helpless – or rather, hopeless – in the kitchen.)

I also met a lovely, lovely Brazilian chicka’ in my hostel room. I initially thought she was only 25 years old – she looked 25 alright! But it turned out, to my utter astonishment, that she was 42 years old!!! If I managed to get a photo with her, I would show you. She is incredibly youthful-looking and youthful-sounding. Turns out she is also a Christian and a singer by profession! It was a wonderful encounter chatting late into the night with someone who shared similar values in life and who also had a taste for solo adventuring.

On one of my last nights, I decided to go out for a sunset walk to see the Blue Mountains at dusk. Before heading out of the hostel, I met a chatty German girl who was an avid rock climber and a nurse by profession (brilliant combination, I know). She was also going to see the sunset! So we decided to go off together. Well… interestingly, we got kind of lost along the way and ended up walking very far off. It started to get dark and we were still nowhere close to the lookout sight unfortunately – and I was getting quite worried! But we forged on with dogged (and rather foolish) determination. Thankfully I had my torch with me. The last of the sunset was beginning to fade just as we arrived at this deserted lookout. The mountains loomed dark and blue and ominous beyond. It was a strange moment. I was afraid – being out there with a stranger, in the quiet of the descending night. We saw the last glowing skies fade out before I hurriedly said, ‘I think we’d better head back now!’

We had a wonderful conversation all the way back, while trying to hitch-hike and get a lift back to town. Unfortunately nobody stopped for us! And a most amusing thing happened when we arrived back. My fellow adventurer turned to me with a breathless smile and said, ‘So, we have been walking for so long and getting lost in the dark and talking so much, now may I ask, what is your name!?’

Yes, suffice to say, it was a rather poignantly funny moment!

'I have Immortal longings in me,' wrote Shakespeare. It's true, as Solomon beautifully wrote in Ecclesiastes, 'He placed Eternity in our hearts.' When you're out here, far from the world's chaos, forgetting the contraints of time, you realize how far you've strayed from what was meant to be & how much more there is beyond life's transient misery. Faith, hope & love is the key.

Had an amazing day out hiking Mount Piddington! It was close to the town of Blackheath in New South Wales. Absolutely stunning views and majestic rock cliffs. I was the only one on the trail for quite a long while! But I absolutely relished the quiet and tranquility. Just me and my thoughts...

At this point, I stopped by a cozy canyon-like nook, got out my tuna and corn sandwich, and settled in for some reading... I was interrupted out of my bliss when I heard some jolly singing a far off. Turns out there was someone else on the trail too! I was quite thankful I wasn't the only one. A jolly middle-aged man clambered down the rocky path and gave me an embarrassed nod at his loud singing. Aha, he must have thought he was the only lone ranger hiking Mount Piddington!

It was an absolutely glorious day! So, so hot when you just stayed out without shade though. I had to ration my water supply. But it was fantastically breath-taking, and at times quite strangely quiet. I could only hear the light wind. Nothing else.

Sending all my love! More updates to come...

One of my favourite moments: while hiking towards Leura Falls, I especially loved sitting on a lone bench atop a cliff-side cavern and listening to the other-worldly crashing of the cascades below me. I remember taking out my precious little Kobo E-reader while munching on a tuna sandwich and soaking in the thought-provoking literature of Bonhoeffer. That was my heaven on earth: just me, my God, His creation, a simple lunch, and a brilliant book.

In the words of Bonhoeffer, the infamous German theologian, pastor, spy & martyr, 'I feel the least lonely when I am alone.' Breath-taking moments in solitude, the rush of the cascades beneath, the stillness of the forest, the grandeur of the mountains. Sitting there reading Bonhoeffer's inspiring biography & savoring a simple sandwich, I know for myself that his words are true, when you are alone, you know in the fullest sense that God is with you.

...

Wow. I have been spending nearly a week up in the quiet mountain town of Katoomba where the quiet majesty of the Blue Mountains never fails to take a hold of something within me every time I hike in its deep valleys and behold its mountainous glories. I thank God for this amazing, amazing time of peace and solitude up here. I am truly savoring every moment: the tranquillity of the mornings waking up at sunrise and having a simple breakfast of hot chocolate and toast with Nutella and a topping of fresh banana slices! (A bit indulgent for breakfast, I know. But ah what the heck, I’m on holiday aren’t I?)

And not to forget, the unforgettably quiet walks to the Blue Mountains, hiking through the dense valley and up the winding trails surrounded by thick forestry, passing by breathtaking waterfalls and cascades, taking in the sight of Jurassic Park-like panoramas with jagged cliff sides and towering rocks with the distant blue-hued mountains beyond!

Sending all my love,
Janielle
